Degrees

When will my degree be posted?

Degree posting can take up to 4-6 weeks after the degree conferral date.

How can I check if my degree was posted?

Login to MyUW>>Student Center>>Academic Records>>View My Degrees.

How can I obtain a letter verifying the degree?

Once posted, you may download a degree verification letter by logging in to MyUW>>Student Center>>Academic Records>>View My Degrees and clicking the “Print Degree Letter” button. Click here for step-by-step instructions.

In case you need additional text on the letter or for it to be sent directly from the university, please contact the Office of the Registrar.

Note to graduate students- graduate students may request a degree completion letter if they have completed all degree requirements and deposited their thesis or dissertation and are waiting until the next degree conferral date to receive their degree. Degree completion letter are only available until the degree conferral date. For more information see Degree Completion letters for Graduate students.

Will the degree be listed on my transcript?

Yes, once the degree is posted, it will be listed on official/unofficial transcripts in the “Degrees Awarded” section near the top of the transcript. If you have previously requested a transcript, you may need to order a new copy.

It’s been over 6 weeks after the degree conferral date, but my degree is not posted. Who should I contact?

My degree was posted but my certificate/additional major wasn’t, why is that?

Certificates and additional majors might take longer to be posted.

Diplomas

When will I receive my diploma?

A diploma will be automatically ordered shortly after your degree is posted, if there are no holds on your record. Once ordered, it can take 2-3 weeks plus mail delivery time to arrive.

Do I need to request my diploma?

There no need to request a diploma, it will be automatically ordered shortly after a degree is posted.

Will I receive an update on the status of my diploma?

An email will be sent to your wisc.edu email address once the diploma has been mailed.

Where will my diploma be sent?

Diplomas will be mailed to your home address on record, unless you have added a diploma address. August 2020 graduates are especially encouraged to add/verify a Diploma address to ensure accurate and timely delivery of the diploma and red diploma cover. Can I change the address after the diploma is sent?

Since diplomas are printed and sent by a 3rd party vendor, we cannot edit the mailing address once the order has been placed.

When is the latest can I edit my address for diploma mailing?

We would recommend editing the address as soon as possible, and no later than the degree conferral date (for Summer 2020 graduates, the conferral date is August 23rd) to prevent the diploma from being mailed to the wrong/inactive address.

Can the diploma be tracked once sent?

Diploma mailings do not have any tracking associated with them.

It’s been X days since my diploma was mailed, but I never received it. Who should I contact?

Please allow 30 days for the diploma to arrive. If you have not received your diploma in the mail 30 days after being notified it was sent, please contact the Office of the Registrar.

Can I pick up my diploma on campus?

No, the Office of the Register does not print or manage diplomas. Diplomas are printed and sent by a 3rd party vendor and will be sent directly to you by mail.

Will my major be listed on my diploma?

UW-Madison diplomas list the student’s legal name, degree earned, and any applicable degree-level Honors earned through an Honors program.
Degree name formats vary from program to program. Majors are not listed on the diploma, unless they are part of the degree being earned.

I completed two majors, will I receive more than one diploma?

At UW-Madison, double majors consist of two majors attached to a single degree, as opposed to two separate degrees, each with its own field of study.

Since diplomas reflect the degree you have earned, only one diploma is awarded. All degrees, majors, certificates and honors earned will be listed on your transcript and included in any degree letters.

I completed a certificate, will I receive a paper certificate?

Although uncommon, some departments will produce and provide students with a paper certificate. You are welcome to contact the relevant academic department to inquire about the certificate you completed.

CeDiplomas

When will a CeDiploma be available?

A certified electronic diploma (CeDiploma) will be available once your diploma has been mailed out, approximately 3 weeks after the degree was posted. An email will be sent to your wisc.edu email address once a CeDiploma is available.

Diploma Covers

Will I receive a diploma cover?

Yes, a diploma cover will be mailed to your home address on record, unless you have added a diploma address. August 2020 graduates are especially encouraged to add/verify a Diploma address to ensure accurate and timely delivery of the diploma cover. I received a diploma cover but not my diploma. Why is that?

Please note diploma covers are mailed separately from diplomas. Please do not be alarmed if the diploma cover was delivered but it does not contain your diploma, the diploma will be delivered separately.

I received my diploma but not a diploma cover. Why is that?

As diplomas and diploma covers are prepared by different vendors and mailed separately, it is to be expected one will arrive before the other. Please contact the Office of the Registrar if you have not received a diploma cover 30 days after your diploma was delivered.
