Tips for students
Respect the rights of others
UW–Madison expects that students will respect the rights of faculty and other students who participate in the educational process. Following the guidelines below will help to ensure the privacy of students:
When e-mailing groups of students, always use blind copies.
Do not post personal information about students on Web sites or share personal information via e-mail.
Students who participate in a course that uses a course management system (Learn@UW, Moodle, etc.) may have access to personal information and academic work produced by other students and faculty members (e.g., class lists, discussion board postings, drafts of papers and other work produced in the course). Federal law and UW–Madison policy require that students must not reveal any information about classmates, course work content, or its authors to anyone outside the course.
Protect information and privacy of records
Students play an important role in maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of their educational records and are encouraged to take the following steps to ensure safety and security:
Never share NetID or password information.
Know what directory information has been withheld, and review it regularly. Withholding directory information can affect a student in unexpected ways (e.g., UW-Madison may not be able to verify the student’s degree information with prospective employers, or the student’s name might not appear in the commencement brochure).
Students wishing to review what directory information has been withheld should log on to Student Center from My UW, click on ‘Privacy’ under Personal Information, then click on the ‘FERPA Restriction’ tab.
