Course Guide Project
The web-based Course Guide will provide a broad spectrum of course information in a consistent format, from a single location.
The Course Guide Vision
- Enriched course information
- Greater accessibility to tools already available
- A place for students to manage information they gather about courses
- A conduit for communication among instructors, departments, advisors and students
Who benefits by using the Course Guide?
- Students and prospective students have asked for this kind of tool to enable them to make informed choices about class selection, including textbook information.
- Advisors can use the tool to share information about courses and provide guidance on course selection.
- Faculty and instructional staff can use the Course Guide to provide detailed information about courses such as syllabi, textbooks, workload expectations, teaching styles and grading criteria. It offers instructors an opportunity to clarify expectations and generate increased interest in courses.
What is the Process for developing the Course Guide?
- Research best practices at peer institutions and UW-Madison
- Gather feedback from stakeholders
- Engage in an iterative and collaborative design process
- Plan for a phased rollout

- Textbook information
- All official course information in one place
- High-level search capability
- Current and future term information
- Class Search (Timetable) connection
- Links to department and/or instructor websites
Future enhancements will include:
- Instructor-provided content
- Class schedule builder
- "Favorites" management for students
- Enhanced search capability
Who is providing input?
- The Course Guide Advisory Group and Policy & Content Subcommittee are comprised of faculty, students, advisors and administrative staff. They provide ongoing feedback to the Project Team and Sponsors.
- Campus stakeholders continue to offer feedback through listening sessions, information-gathering
sessions, committee meetings and informal networking.
